Ukraine Lab
UKRAINE LAB is an online writing residency for six emerging writers from Ukraine and the United Kingdom. In partnership with PEN Ukraine and the Ukrainian Institute, the Ukrainian Institute London will support the authors developmentally and financially to produce creative nonfiction pieces which will tackle global challenges through the prism of Ukraine. UKRAINE LAB is supported by the British Council under the UK/Ukraine Season of Culture 2022.
Ukrainian Retrospective 2023
The Ukrainian Institute London presents a retrospective of Ukrainian cinema, showcasing five iconic Ukrainian films at The Garden Cinema.
This film series will uncover Ukraine’s rich cinematic heritage for London audiences, with each film introduced by a Ukrainian film expert. These screenings are held in partnership with Ukraine’s largest archive of classic films, the Dovzhenko Centre.
London Ukrainian Review
London Ukrainian Review is a special publication of the Ukrainian Institute London. It covers an array of topics—from literature and art to politics and the environment, through a variety of forms, including intellectual essay, reportage, poetry, short fiction and visual art. Film Festival
The Ukrainian Film Festival is an annual celebration of contemporary and classic Ukrainian cinema run by the Ukrainian Institute London and held at Curzon Soho.
Through our carefully curated programme, we turn to Ukraine’s culture and cinema to deepen our understanding of the country’s complex history and explore its multifaceted identity. Each year, the festival explores a new concept that allows us to plug into Ukraine’s evolving narrative through its cinema, offering a dynamic platform for both established and emerging filmmakers. In 2025, our newest festival, Through Love and Loss, focusses on how these profound currents are shaping people’s lives.
Cassandra
In October 2022, Live Canon and the Ukrainian Institute London presented the UK premiere of Lesia Ukrainka’s Cassandra at London’s Omnibus Theatre. In March 2023, the production toured to Oxford and Cambridge as part of the UK-Ukraine Season, produced jointly by the British Council and the Ukrainian Institute.
Translation Prize
This year’s theme – prose and poetry about Russia’s war against Ukraine – attracted a wide number of submissions, and we were impressed with the quality of the translations. Two of this year’s jury members shared their impressions of the submissions they read.
Our Courses
Kino 2025 | Ukrainian cinema: a century of innovation, struggle, and resilience
Istoria
This online course is for anyone who is interested in Ukrainian history. The course will discuss contested historical issues from the legacy of Kyivan Rus to contemporary perceptions of the Donbas. It will examine the Ukrainian Revolution of 1917-21, the Holodomor, and the Second World War, looking at questions of individual survival, collective resistance and national culture.

Discover Ukraine through literature
The Ukrainian Institute London is delighted to announce Ukrainian Literature in Translation Prize 2022. For this year’s competition, we will accept translations from the Ukrainian language into English of short prose and poetry that focuses on Russia’s war in Ukraine.
