How do we find a language for experiences that seem impossible to put into words? Sometimes, in seeking the universal, we turn to folklore.
‘Apocalypse Baroque: Tales from Ukraine at War’ bears witness to a country at war and a culture fighting against erasure. Travelling across Ukraine, writer, head of INDEX Dr Sasha Dovzhyk has collected testimonies of everyday defiance. What has emerged is a collection of sixteen tales where characters from myth and legend stand alongside Ukrainians, united in the fight for justice.

Sasha Dovzhyk is the director of INDEX: Institute for Documentation and Exchange, a new cultural and research institution based in Lviv, Ukraine. She is also the author of Shapeshifters, a new volume of stories documenting the Russian war on Ukraine.

Uilleam Blacker
Uilleam Blacker is Associate Professor of Ukrainian and East European Culture at the UCL School of Slavonic and East European studies and a translator of Ukrainian literature. He is the author of Memory, the City and the Legacy of World War II in East Central Europe (2019). He has written on Ukraine for The Guardian, The Atlantic, Financial Times, Times Literary Supplement and others, and his translations have appeared in The Guardian, The White Review, Words without Borders and others.
