Kino

Discover Ukraine through cinema

For decades, Ukrainian cinema was overshadowed by imperial narratives, with its most innovative works appropriated or censored. Yet, despite these challenges, Ukrainian filmmakers created distinctive and influential artistic movements—from the revolutionary avant-garde of the 1920s to the poetic cinema of the 1960s and the socially engaged documentaries of the present. This course will guide you through the key periods, figures, and phenomena that have shaped Ukrainian film history.

Istoria

Discover Ukraine through history

This online course is for anyone who is interested in Ukrainian history. The course will discuss contested historical issues from the legacy of Kyivan Rus to contemporary perceptions of the Donbas. It examines the Ukrainian Revolution of 1917–21, the Holodomor, and the Second World War, looking at questions of individual survival, collective resistance and national culture.

Literatura

Discover Ukraine through literature

Throughout its history, Ukrainian literature has struggled for its right to exist against larger powers, chief among which was the Russian Empire, later the USSR, and the Russian Federation as of 2025. Within the eight weeks of LITERATURA, we will discover key authors and look at their writing as not only artistic expression but acts of resistance. From Taras Shevchenko to Tamara Duda, Ukrainians write for the sake of perseverance as much as literature.

Kultura

Discover Ukraine through culture

What is the role of art and visual culture in shaping and defining identities? How can we ascribe artists and artworks from historical periods and geographies to contemporary nation-states? What is the value of art, especially in the time of war? And can it be weaponised or used as a tool of cultural diplomacy? Within the eight weeks of the Ukrainian Institute London’s Kultura course, we will delve into all these questions and more.
