While we celebrate the independence of Ukraine on 24 August 1991, the processes that brought it about began much earlier and continue to evolve today. Ukrainian cinema in the late 1980s to early 1990s was a contradictory phenomenon—a spontaneous cinematic response to one of the most dramatic and unsettled periods in the country’s history, marked by a collision of hope and despair, fleeting exhilaration followed by deep disillusionment.
