Journalists are often the first to gather evidence on war crimes committed across the globe. However, testimonies collected by journalists are frequently dismissed by international courts due to discrepancies between legal and journalistic modes of investigation.

The Reckoning Project: Ukraine Testifies aims to close this gap by bringing together leading journalists and international lawyers with previous experience investigating war crimes in Syria, Chechnya, Rwanda and Bosnia. War reporters on the ground in Ukraine work together with lawyers to gather legally admissible testimonies, so that the voices of victims may be heard inside the courts of law.

Join us to watch short documentaries produced by The Reckoning, and hear from co-founder and leading Ukrainian journalist Nataliya Gumenyuk, and international lawyer Ibrahim Olabi.

We will be screening the following short documentaries produced by The Reckoning:

  • The Most Frightening Days of My Life. Yahidne [18 min]. In the small village of Yahidne, the Russian army held 367 local residents captive in a school basement. Residents share testimonies of their experiences of over one month of captivity.
  • Chernihiv [18 min]. Following the Russian bombardment of residential districts of Chernhiv, local people tell their stories.
  • Return Me to My Dad [10 min]. The story of three children from Mariupol who were forcibly deported to Russia and narrowly escaped being adopted into Russian families.

This event is co-organised by the Ukrainian Institute London and the Frontline Club.
