The British-Ukrainian Law Association (BULA), a bilateral legal organisation, held a re-launch reception in London during the Global Law Summit on February 25, 2015, marking 800 years since the sealing of Magna Carta.
BULA, originally founded in 1993, has over the past two decades focussed on British-Ukrainian bilateral legal relations. Its Chairman, the highly distinguished Judge John Dixon, sadly passed away last September.
During the opening remarks at the re-launch reception, Alexander Walsh, a recognised British litigation lawyer and acting chairman of BULA said: “The objects of the Association are to encourage and assist professional relationships between lawyers in the United Kingdom and lawyers in Ukraine, to assist the development of the legal profession in Ukraine by any appropriate means including mutual exchanges, placement and training programmes.”

Edward Bennett, Barrister at Field Court Chambers and BULA committee member, spoke of Judge John Dixon, who has been remembered by many as ‘the most human and humane of people’.
Volodymyr Sayenko, a partner at leading Ukrainian law firm Sayenko Kharenko, recently elected to the BULA committee, spoke of the future of BULA and upcoming programmes in both Ukraine and the United Kingdom.
BULA will focus on supplying information and advice, promoting seminars on topics of mutual interest, and supervising programmes for the placement of Ukrainian lawyers in the United Kingdom. It will provide advice and assistance, in connection with the administration of justice in Ukraine and in the drafting of legislation.
In attendance were also Ihor Kyzym Chargé d’affaires from the Ukrainian embassy in London, together with around 50 leading Ukrainian and English qualified lawyers.
The Global Law Summit marked 800 years since the sealing of the Magna Carta, this was a unique opportunity to commemorate, celebrate and embrace 800 years of legal history which have inspired lawyers and non-lawyers alike for generations.
The three-day conference programme, led by world-class speakers, experts, and decision-makers, was unique in grounding the legacy and values of the Magna Carta in a firmly 21st Century context.
