This seminar examines the reception and interpretation of cubism and futurism across the territories of Ukraine during the first two decades of the twentieth century. Focusing on the centres of Lviv, Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Odesa, we will trace the origins of radical artistic experimentation, situating avant-garde developments in Ukraine between the Italian, French, Polish, and Russian formulations of cubism and futurism while foregrounding the contributions of artists from Ukraine to these international movements.
